The team that won TES "Maths Team of the Year" 2016.
We believe that Mathematics equips students with uniquely powerful ways to describe analyse and change the world and as such is a critical part of the core curriculum with students studying Mathematics for four hours per week.
In years 7 students are placed in ability groups based upon Key Stage 2 results and information provided by the primary school. Each half term all our students are tested to assess their progress, which is constantly monitored and set changes may be made throughout the school year where it is deemed appropriate for the student. Pupils with special needs are catered for by differentiated work in lessons and by the provision of specialist support staff and a Mathematics specialist teaching assistant attached to the faculty.
Students are fully supported throughout their time at Alcester Academy with excellent resources, targeted teaching, opportunities to attend after school sessions as well as extra support from teachers in the department on an individual and small group basis. In line with the Academy’s home learning policy, to reinforce and extend skills, work (primarily online) is set regularly (computers are available out of lesson time if required).
KEY STAGE 3 (Years 7 and 8)
Students study the Mathematics National Curriculum and through this we aim to develop in our students:
· A positive attitude towards Mathematics as well as competence and confidence in mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills
· An ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and logically
· The skills to use their own initiative and an ability to work both independently and in co-operation with others
· An ability to communicate through mathematics, and to use and apply mathematics across the curriculum and in real life
KEY STAGE 4 (Years 9, 10 and 11)
Students are prepared to sit their GCSE examination using the Edexcel Linear course from the start of year 9 and the course concludes with three examinations (two calculator and one non-calculator) with grades (9 to 1) determined by performance across all papers.
Gifted and Talented
A programme of able, gifted and talented activities is being developed across the age range as part of our aim to inspire and extend all abilities including the UKMT Mathematics Challenges at Junior and Intermediate Level.
