Drama
KEY STAGE 3
Drama is taught as a discrete subject in Years 7 & 8. Year 7 and 8 will be taught a range of theatre skills and techniques. They will experiment with improvisation, physical theatre and scripted work. Drama in Year 7 and 8 will enable pupils to gain the basic skills needed to continue drama at GCSE level but will also encourage pupils to work with others in a co-operative way to achieve a high degree of concentration. Every year they will have the opportunity to perform some of their work in front of an audience to celebrate their achievements. We will work closely with the Music to produce combined projects during the year and pupils are given the opportunity to go and watch a live theatre performance during key stage 3.

KEY STAGE 4
Drama is an option in Year 9-11. During year 9 we will begin towards AQA GCSE Drama. This is a course with two practical assessments and a 1 1/2 hour written examination. Practical assessment is carried out by the teacher in charge of Drama, with moderation by the external examining body. The course is 60% practical and 40% written examination. During the course students will keep a work book to help them with their written exam in June.


At present, students studying Drama will follow the syllabus laid down by AQA. This is a course with two practical assessments and a 1.5 hour written examination. Practical assessment is carried out by the teacher in charge of Drama, with moderation by the external examining body. The course is 60% practical and 40% written examination.
The aim of Drama is to enable students to develop:

An enjoyment and appreciation of live theatre.

  • Exploration and enactment of human experience through Drama.
  • Research skills necessary to acquire relevant information.
  • An understanding of the place of Drama in modern society.
  • A capacity for self-evaluation.
  • The ability to appreciate and evaluate the work of others.
  • The ability to work together as a group displaying awareness of and sensitivity to others.
  • Related social skills such as self-confidence, concentration, self-discipline and
    communication.
  • An insight into plays and other forms of drama.
  • Thorough understanding of at least one full length text.

Trust and co-operation are of paramount importance so that all pupils feel they are able to experiment with ideas without feeling embarrassed.
