Personal Development Curriculum

Personal Development Curriculum

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and ensures that each of our students will understand more about how to play a positive and successful role within our society.

Our aim is to support students’ spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development, prepare and equip them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. Our aim is to provide students with a knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that they face as they grow up. We aim to provide our students with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.

  • Promote outstanding personal development so that students become well-educated and well-rounded young adults
  • Promote SMSC development of students and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
  • Promote good behaviour and positive character traits e.g. Resilience, self-regulation and empathy
  • Foster good mental wellbeing in students so that they can fulfil their full potential at school and are well prepared for life

We want our students to clearly understand how to keep themselves (and others) safe and healthy (online and offline), to be accepting of diversity, to show empathy and kindness, and to make a positive contribution to their school, local, and wider communities.

Our PD curriculum also plays in a key role in the safeguarding of our pupils, adopting a preventative approach and signposting to people/organisations to offer support, advice and guidance. Our curriculum is also flexible and responsive to dealing efficiently with school, local and wider issues as they arise – providing a safe and supportive environment to discuss complex, sensitive and current topics.

We pride ourselves in providing a variety of curriculum approaches and our Personal Development is delivered through the following areas:

  • Year 7: Receive bespoke Personal Development (PD) lessons weekly for 1 hour as part of their timetabled lessons. They will also cover additional elements of PD through weekly tutor sessions.
  • Years 8 to 11: Personal Development sessions take places through two tutor sessions per week delivered by our tutor teams. There will also be additional sessions throughout the year based around specific themes as needed.
  • Our assembly programme is based around personal development and SMSC themes and supports and highlights national awareness days.
  • All year groups also participate in our Super Learning Days where we cover a variety of themes and deliver our Relationships & Sex Education programme through these sessions using a variety of speakers and outside agencies to support as required. We also work closely with Loudmouth Theatre in Education Company to deliver these programmes and provide our students with the most up to date information through drama, small group and activity-based sessions.
